Reflections

Below are my current reflections on University work that I have completed

Assessment One

Personal Reflection

Assessment 1 required us to undertake a skills audit and to start looking at what roles within the industry we want to undertake. For me, I am wanting to work in the Sports Media industry so I had to analyse what my strong skill sets are as well as what my weak skills sets are in order to improve them before going into a workplace environment. The skills audit in particular really surprised me, as I didn’t expect myself to have such a diverse skill set. I learnt that I am a great team player, with great initiative and the ability to plan and organise effectively. I also found that I wasn’t surprised seeing that I need to work on communication, self-management and analytical skills. I have always struggled with these and I am hoping that this course helps to develop these skills further. When completing the personal reflection, I had to research what kind of roles interested me in the sports industry as I had no idea what was out there. When looking at specific roles, I could also plan a way to develop the skills needed to be successful in each. Overall, it was really helpful in identifying what I need to do to take the next steps in my career.

Assessment Two

Industry Panel

The second assessment was an Industry Panel. The industry panel gave us the opportunity to meet those working in the industries we want to participate in. Luckily enough for us, we had three guests; Adrienne Francis, current ABC presenter and host, Bryden Campbell, the founder of Brand Rebellion and UC Alumni, Rosie Harrison who is a Media and Digital Coordinator at the Canberra Raiders. Having an all women panel was really inspiring because it shows that women can be in leading roles in the industry they chose to work in as well as be successful in doing so. The panel gave us the chance to prepare and ask questions to help us further understand specific roles in the industry as well as what it is like working in different environments. From this panel, I learnt how exciting and different each day could be when working in the digital media frame, in the sports media industry. Looking back on this assessment, it really helped me to open my eyes on the different industries that I could join once finishing my degree and they showed just how important it is to be yourself and play to your strengths.

Assessment 3

Duo Presentation

Our final assessment for our Professional Orientation class was a duo presentation about our selected industry, the careers available and what we wanted to do. I was partnered up with a fellow sports media student. Firstly, we discussed how the industry started and where it is today. We then went into what career options there were and which careers we wanted to undertake. Lastly, we discussed what the industry landscape currently looks like and what the future could look like for the sports media industry. In this assessment, I learnt that there are so many other roles outside of being a journalist or content creator in this field. It really opened my eyes to the opportunities that I can try to work towards come the end of my degree. As well as this, it gave me the chance to work with a fellow student, learning about what her goals are and creating a new friendship. Altogether, this assessment helped me to understand the sports media industry more thoroughly and start to piece together what my future could look like. It was really enjoyable to do and gave me the opportunity to be creative as well as professional.

In Class

Workshops Activities

Our in-class activities ranged from small group discussions to simple writing tasks and personal reflections. In our small group discussions, we worked on topics such as what social media is used most often in our industries, what communication strategies are needed in our industry as well as what Code of Ethics we must follow and how to network. In our small writing tasks, we had the chance to write synopsises about different topics. Most of our activities were self-reflection, asking ourselves questions to dig deeper into who we are professionals and how we can improve going into our selected industry.
